Redmer announces he will run for 7th District Senate: Same seat County Executive Smith is considering

Former state delegate Al Redmer is expected to announce Wednesday night that he is returning to politics and running for state Senate.

Redmer confirmed Wednesday that he will announce that he is running for the 7th District Senate seat. The announcement will be made at a campaign event at the Kingsville Volunteer Fire Company.

"I believe I possess the leadership intangibles to represent the citizens of the 7th District," Redmer said.

The seat is currently held by Republican Sen. Andy Harris. Harris has announced that he will not seek another term but will instead seek a Congressional rematch against first-term Democratic Rep. Frank Kratovil.

Redmer served in the House of Delegates, representing the 8th District including Perry Hall, Parkville and Overlea, from 1991 to May 2003 when he was appointed insurance commissioner by Republican Gov. Robert Ehrlich.

Redmer served as House Minority leader for the last three years he was in the House of Delegates.

His announcement is not unexpected. Redmer has been going door-to-door in areas that were both in the 7th district and in the 1st congressional district.

Several other seasoned politicians are also eyeing the 7th District seat.

Del. J.B. Jennings, a Republican who has represented the district as a delegate for two-terms, has already announced his intentions to run for the seat.

Democratic Councilman Vince Gardina had been raising money for a possible run for the seat but said he might not run if County Executive Jim Smith does.

And last month, Smith announced he was moving to Cockeysville from his home in Reisterstown -- and was considering running for the state senate seat.
