Lawyer group auto insurance Say report is good news for vict

TORONTO - Lawyer groups say a review of the insurance industry released Friday is good news for accident victims facing massive deductibles imposed by auto insurers.

The five-year review, conducted by the Financial Services Commission of Ontario, advises the provincial government to reduce the deductibles for injured accident victims from the current $15,000 and $30,000 to $10,000 and $20,000.

The Ontario Trial Lawyers Association and Ontario Bar Association, which welcomed the report, say it recognizes the "punitive nature" of the industry's deductibles.

Richard Halpern of the bar association says the insurance industry has always been one of Canada's most profitable and can easily afford the proposed changes.

Stephen Nelson, whose mother died in a 2004 car accident, says he hopes the report will prompt the government to enforce changes regarding deductibles.

Nelson's family was forced to sue their insurance company to live up to its obligations after it held back $165,000 in deductibles against compensation awards.
