According to Swiftcover, being stopped by the police while over the limit will have a "massive impact" on the cost of cover.
Motorists were also reminded they may face a ban, which could affect their ability to work.
This comes after research by Swiftcover revealed 60 per cent of drivers overestimate how much alcohol they are allowed to consume before getting behind the wheel.
A spokesman commented: "There's a whole chain of events that could happen just by drinking one pint more than the limit, just because you are not aware of or you don't understand what the limit is."
He added the lack of knowledge in this area suggests motorists are not taking the issue as seriously as they should.
The company representative went on to say vehicle owners who risk taking to the road after consuming a couple of pints are putting everyone they encounter in danger.
At the moment, the UK drink-drive limit is 80 mg of alcohol per 100 ml of blood.
