Jul 1 - Q: I paid my car insurance now and the end of the statement that I said to call my license plate for 30 days because my insurance lapsed. What can I do? - J.M., Fayetteville
A: Try to appeal.
If you do, and if it was indeed a time, honest mistake that we can explain and that you have already corrected, then you be the end of May - if you May also be fined.
You can request an appeal in writing to the address in your letter to the Division of Motor Vehicles.
Or, call (919) 715-7000. If you do the latter, they can schedule the call right then, as long as you have the insurance information, including name of insurer and your policy number.
The call will take place at a local DMV office, probably within four to six weeks. In the meantime, the agency that you can continue driving with the plate.
All motor vehicles registered in North Carolina are required by law to be covered by liability insurance. The insurer will notify the DMV when a policy is canceled. At this point, the DMV sends a warning to the owner of the vehicle, giving that person 20 days to prove the vehicle is covered by liability insurance before the license plate is revoked.
