GEICO: Are You Covered for Road Trips to Mexico and Canada?

Road trips can define the summer season for many travelers, and if youare planning a trip to Mexico or Canada, there are some importantinsurance details GEICO would like you to know:

Mexico

Driving in Mexico requires an additional auto insurance policybecause your U.S. auto policy is not valid in Mexico. Theadditional policy will cover your vehicle in the event that you are inan accident while driving within the country's borders. Some policiesmay cover certain legal expenses if you are taken into custody relatedto an accident.

"If you find yourself involved in an accident, it must be reportedwhile you are still in Mexico," said John Zinno, assistant vicepresident of GEICO's property agency. "Also, contact the localconsular office if you find yourself involved in an accident. Theywill help you obtain additional information that could assist you inlegal matters."

GEICO offers auto, motorcycle or recreational vehicle (RV) policiesfor your Mexican vacation that can be purchased by calling GEICO at1-888-713-3312.

Canada

If you are taking your car to Canada, you don't need to worry aboutgetting a separate policy, but you do need to make sure to contactGEICO to obtain Canadian ID cards one to two weeks in advance.The advanced notice will give GEICO time to send your ID cards, whichact as your proof of insurance while you are in Canada.

If involved in an accident, you can report it as you normally would bycalling GEICO or logging on to geico.com.

Remember to bring your passport, valid driver's license and emergencycontacts.

Leave copies of your itinerary with a family member or friend.
