Queensland drivers are amongst the worst in Australia, according to the research, with 84% admitting to dangerous driving habits including 84% speeding, 46% not checking their blind spot before changing lanes and 22% not giving way at a roundabout. Interestingly, Queensland drivers are the most likely not to wave when being let into traffic yet 96% indicate they become annoyed when other drivers breach driving etiquette.
Tasmanian drivers also clocked in as some of the countries worst drivers with 77% admitting to dangerous driving habits, 33% not giving way at a roundabout and 40% taking part in road rage incidents.
West Australian drivers come in as Australia's most courteous drivers with 98% stating they get upset over lack of courtesy and 19% not giving way at roundabouts, but surprisingly 88% of West Australians revealed they regularly speed, the highest percentage in Australia.
Title for the worst drivers in Australia goes to New South Wales where 85% admit to dangerous driving habits, more than 50% to blocking another driver from changing lanes, 73% witnessing road rage, and 33% not giving way at a roundabout.
In the eternal 'Women Versus Men Drivers' battle, women come out on top as the safer drivers.
"We were not surprised that men admit to being more reckless on the roads. This is reflected by our claims data which shows men have far more accidents than women," said Eddie Feltham, Managing Director of 1Cover.
"In fact, it is an industry-wide standard that car insurance premiums are more expensive for men than they are for women," Feltham concludes.
Statistics reveal 30% of men don't stop at zebra crossings compared to 19% of women; 31% of men don't give way at roundabouts compared to 21% of women; 49% of men block other drivers from changing lanes compared to 41% of women; 86% of men speed compared to 82% of women; and 37% of men have been involved in road rage compared to 26% of women.
Feltham suggests consumers have more control over the cost of their car insurance (http://www.1cover.com.au/carinsurance/) premium than they realise. By following a few simple guidelines such as avoiding foreign, high-powered and modified vehicles, parking overnight in a secure, off-road location and not speeding or committing other driving misdemeanours, drivers can slash the cost of their car insurance.
1Cover, an Australian market leader in online travel insurance, budget car insurance (http://www.1cover.com.au/carinsurance/budget-car-insurance.jsp) and home insurance, have a client base exceeding 1 million Australians. Based in NSW, 1Cover offers top quality insurance policies at some of the lowest rates in Australia and underwritten by Allianz.
Feltham says buying car insurance online has nothing but advantages with facilities available 24/7 and no forms ever. However, being mindful that sometimes nothing substitutes for quality personal interaction, 1Cover also provide phone-based Customer Service Consultants in their Australian call centre.
