Mo. Governor Taps Exec Swiss Re as Commissioner Sean P Carr
Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon Swiss Re has appointed John Huff of the state executive of the new Commissioner of Insurance, pending confirmation by the state Senate.
Huff announcing the appointment as Director of the Department of Insurance, financial institutions and professional registration, Nixon praised his 16 years of industry experience as a private lawyer and insurance executive.
"With its solid experience in the insurance industry, John Huff will be tough but fair regulator will be a watchdog for aggressive Missouri consumers," Nixon, who won the election in November, in a statement.
J. Robert Hunter, director of insurance for the Consumer Federation of America, skip to the appointment of a person for purely industry insider experience.
Insurance industry representatives welcomed the appointment of Huff and praised Nixon for the nomination of a veteran of the insurance on the job. "The healthy insurance climate in Missouri, which has worked well in recent years to serve the needs of consumers and insurers, to a large extent a product of the prospective regulatory practices of the department and its leaders," Steve Schneider, Vice President American Insurance Association, the Midwest, wrote in a letter to the candidate.
Huff, 48, joined Swiss Re in June 2006 as managing director and strategic officer claims the United States. He moved to the insurer's headquarters in Zurich in July 2008 to serve as global head of management of the main causes, according to the announcement.
Previously, Huff is a world leader in applications of GE Insurance Solutions from 1998 to 2006. He began his career as a lawyer Field, Gentry & Benjamin, PC, a practice of insurance in Kansas City, Mo., from 1992 to 1998. He holds an MBA from the University of St. Louis and a JD from the University of Washington School of Law.
