NY AG: Health insurer to avoid the base rate of The Associated Press
ALBANY, NY_New York Attorney General Andrew Cuomo says the insurer Cigna Corp. joins national push to reform the way the reimbursement rates for health care are set.
Cigna will stop using a database to calculate controversial reimbursement for patients who see doctors outside their networks of insurance. The company will also contribute $ 10 million to a new database independent.
Cuomo says the Ingenix database, owned by UnitedHealth Group Inc., helped pay for too many patients because of conflicting interests. Minnetonka, Minn.-based UnitedHealth has decided to close it.
Tuesday's announcement comes as Cuomo plans to Rochester, NY-based Excellus Health Plan, saying that it defrauded consumers by manipulating interest rates. Excellus officials have not commented.
