Wellpoint paying $ 10 million to the database in agreement with the New York Attorney General Fran Lysiak
Wellpoint Inc. stop using the database maintained by Ingenix and pay $ 10 million to a nonprofit organization that aims to establish a new, independent database that will determine the reimbursement rates for members at their visits outside the network of doctors, under a settlement with New York Attorney General.
Wellpoint (NYSE: WLP), the largest health insurer in the United States by members, becomes the fourth national health insurer to reach an agreement with Attorney General Andrew Cuomo, who launched an industrywide probe of off-grid reimbursement rates, a year ago.
His investigation focused on Ingenix, a database of billing health in UnitedHealth Group (NYSE: UNH). The database, many insurers use to determine their usual and customary rates "for doctors outside their networks, has been rigged and ripped off consumers by hundreds of millions of dollars," Cuomo charged.
Wellpoint, its subsidiary Empire Blue Cross Blue Shield, is the largest health insurer in New York State, with about 5 million members, the Attorney General's Office said.
In a statement, the Indianapolis-based Wellpoint said he had agreed to stop using the Ingenix database, it uses in determining off-network reimbursement for certain products and in some states. "
"Wellpoint agrees to process claims as appropriate and equitable to reimburse health care providers for services covered under each member of his contract, while at the same time protecting our members and customers group against the excesses of certain costs from suppliers without law, "said Ken Goulet, Vice President Director and CEO of Wellpoint business, in a statement. The company recognizes the conflict of interest in the database, he says.
UnitedHealth, Aetna (NYSE: AET) and Cigna (NYSE: CI) have reached similar agreements with the Attorney General, who agreed to contribute $ 50 million, 20 million and $ 10 million, respectively, not yet named organization Nonprofit (BestWire, Feb. 18, 2009).
"By securing an agreement with the largest insurer in the country, we continue to expand the number of Americans who will now be provided free of conflict of interests grip system slammed dedicated individuals and family members, medical expenses that they do not deserve and could not afford, "Cuomo said in a statement.
Wellpoint subsidiaries currently have Best's Financial Strength Ratings ranging from A to A-(Excellent).
