TITLE: Bill Clinton: Road to reform health care easier now
Former President Bill Clinton said Wednesday that the revision of the nation, the health system should be easier now than when he attempted in the early 90s, despite the current financial.
"I think the consensus is overwhelming," Clinton said in an interview with Dr. Sanjay Gupta recorded for CNN's "Larry King Live."
"Politics and economics are much better now and policies are better," he said. "They have made progress on where we were."
In 1993, Clinton pushed for a universal health care, with his wife, then first lady Hillary Clinton, the head of a taskforce on the issue. Small business groups, doctors, the insurance industry and the Republican Congress aligned to fight against the plan, which was officially declared dead in Congress the next year.
President Obama's plan, which offers people the opportunity to buy the same health plan from the federal government use, avoids some of the most controversial aspects of this effort.
"We have a simpler, clearer towards the future than we did when I was there," said Clinton.
"You do not need to have an employer mandate. You do not have a tax increase," he said. "I think the barriers are lower than they were."
These differences have doctors, small business owners and even some in the insurance industry more open to reform, "said Clinton.
In addition, Democrats now hold comfortable majorities in the House and Senate, which means fewer Republican votes are needed to achieve the 60 votes needed to avoid an obstruction in the Senate.
Clinton said Obama is positioned to manage the struggle for health care reform, in part because of the development through its projects have been during its struggle Democratic nomination now Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.
He cited a forum of health care in which Obama, Clinton and others have submitted their plans, opening them to criticism of their opponents and creating the possibility of further improvement.
"When the first was winnowed to two candidates, there was a difference on how universal coverage to be, but the plan by Hillary and then-Sen. Obama's plan to close the air," a said Clinton. "The president then made it very clear he was going in that direction."
Economic times should not impede the reform, "said Clinton.
"I believe that health care and education and energy are all economic issues," he said.
"For many people, many working families in America, before the financial crisis, the economic problem, they have been health care," he said. "Health care is driving the majority of bankruptcies in this country. He has been keeping parents up late at night. "
