Tue 23 - a businesswoman Belinda Mossor was shaken by the unexpected death of his father, Harry, in 1998.

But the pain and distress, she and her mother, Marjorie, have felt worse because Harry Mossor does not leave any sort of succession plan.

"It was total chaos," said Belinda Mossor. "My father was ex-military and ex-officials, and he retired at 32 years in the army and 20, some in the public service. When he died, he had absolutely nothing in place. There was no will, there were no guidelines and it is extremely difficult.

"He did not anticipate whether there is a life insurance policy to help the financial burden," said Mossor. "He did not have anything in place for what he wants for the burial or cremation. He just felt that social security or health and value of the house they lived in take care of her (Marjorie Mossor) and take care of everything. "

It took three years for Mossor and his mother to sort out Harry Mossor finance, insurance and other assets. Eleven years later, Marjorie Mossor is always learning new things about her late husband's finances. She recently received a letter from an insurance company informing dividends from a policy that belonged to her.

After recovery of the initial shock of the death of his father, Mossor consulted an estate planning lawyer and put his affairs in order. She encourages others to do likewise.

"This is the greatest kindness you can do to anyone," she says. "Even if you think you have nothing to anyone to nominate, to put something in writing. Give them a shot fingertips. Tell them what you want. "

March is the month to draft a will and a number of non-profit Tucson, coordinated by the local planning grants, offer free workshops in estate planning.

Estate planning can include writing a will, the designation and financial health of power, establishing a living will, looking at inheritance tax and the methods of transfer of property and establish trust, "said Kay Richter, a former law and estate planning lawyer in Tucson.

Its clients are mostly retired, but she says, "I'd like to see more young people coming to their succession plans, especially if someone has a child.

"I do not see as much as the planning, it should be," she said. "They need to make arrangements for who will care for the child if they died and who will manage the money, they leave for the child. You can create a trust for a child of someone one else to manage their financial affairs until, say, age 25 years. If this is not in place, the courts decide what is in the best interests of the child. "

Richter and Craig Wisnom, another Tucson lawyer who specializes in estate planning, said a person, even with few assets and no dependents must have a basic plan in place that includes a will, a living will and the name of financial and healthcare powers of attorney.

Nurse and psychotherapist Fran Gibbs has conducted extensive research before deciding on the terms of his living will, and took the precaution of filling DNR - Do Not Resuscitate - cards, which they cover it and its car at any time. The orange to indicate that cardholders do not want rescue measures taken must stop their heart.

Knowing what she wanted was the easy part for Gibbs - to find someone she could count on to carry out its will has been more difficult.

"It is a huge burden on the family, and I do not think the family should be responsible for this," she said.

Initially, she planned to nominate her husband as her health care power, but when she explained her will, also called advanced health care directives, her husband admitted that he could not answer, it would allow doctors to do everything possible to keep alive the tragedy should strike.

Gibbs then turned to a trusted friend, who quickly agreed. But when that friend has not complied with the provisions of its own sister lives, Gibbs reviewed again.

"With guidance, it is better that you have the right of the person who will make the right decisions," said Gibbs. "You have to choose someone you trust to carry out your wishes.

"People are arbitrarily agree, but when it comes to having to make decisions about their finances, their health, burial, they are often doing what they think is best and not what the nobody wants. "

Wisnom said: "It is for each client to understand the job and choose the person who is best suited for this work. This is not a sign of honor or a sign of love. C 's work, and people have to make that decision accordingly. "
