What can the elderly over the next five days to ensure coverage for the next nine months
SHELTON, Conn., March 27 / PRNewswire / - The open enrollment period for individuals who are enrolled in Medicare plans to make final changes to their benefits in 2009 will end Tuesday, March 31. Seniors and their caregivers have five days to take a look, consider a further change, they can not switch to a new Medicare plan. The next opportunity for change will be in November for a 1 January 2010 effective date.

Prior to April 1, Medicare beneficiaries can make the following changes:
- Those enrolled in Medicare Advantage plans with drug coverage to order may disenroll back to original coverage and coverage for prescription drugs. - Those enrolled in a benefit of Medicare Prescription Drug (MAPD) plan can switch to another MAPD plan. - Those enrolled in original Medicare may enroll in a Medicare Advantage plan.

However, there are situations in which older persons can make changes or after 1 April 2009, including:
- Lose employer-sponsored health benefits - Move to another county or state - Go in or out of a nursing home - are diagnosed with a chronic illness or disabilities are considered after lock-in beginning of period - Sign Up or disenroll Medicaid or - Meeting with certain levels of income and benefit from government programs Medicare.

Seniors with annual incomes below $ 12,500 for individuals and $ 25,000 for couples are eligible for assistance. States also have programs to help seniors pay for the cost of health benefits, including New York Drug Program of EPIC, Connecticut ConnPACE of Texas and Texas Kidney health care program.
