Congresswoman Donna F. Edwards' Statement on President Obama's Health Care Reform Speech
Washington, D.C. - Congresswoman Donna F. Edwards (D-MD) released the following statement in response to President Barack Obama's speech to a joint session of Congress.
"I applaud President Obama for his steadfast commitment and dedication to expanding access to health care and lowering sky-rocketing medical costs for all American families and small businesses. I support the goals of lowering costs, providing competition, and holding insurance companies accountable. To accomplish these goals, I agree with the President that a public option will lower costs for American families, create real competition to private insurers, and put people, not corporations, in charge of their health care.
"Maintaining the status quo is unacceptable. We must reform a system in which millions of American families file for bankruptcy every year due to medical debt, American workers lose their jobs and find themselves unable to pay for needed medical services, and small businesses crumble under the cost of providing insurance to their employees.
"As the President made clear, health reform is about people and families - it's a moral imperative. I look forward to continue working with my Congressional colleagues to pass comprehensive health care reform for the American people."
