HARTFORD, Conn. - (BUSINESS WIRE) - March 27, 2009 - Aetna (NYSE: AET) is celebrating National Doctors updated 30 March 2009 by allowing its employees and members to send cards to their doctors to thank for a job well made. To make it easy to participate, Aetna has its own design team to create a variety of maps to download directly from their website at www. Aetna.com. There are even special cards to send children to their pediatricians. Aetna invites public to join in the celebrations and share maps with their doctor as well.
The idea of devoting a day to honor physicians was conceived by Eudora Brown Almond, wife of Mr. Charles B. Almond of Winder, Georgia. For the first observation on 30 March 1933, persons sent to medical cards and put flowers on the graves of the doctors who had died. Over the years, a red carnation has come to symbolize respect.
"We felt that doctors could assess the maps to find out how much care they provide are valued by their patients," said Lonny Reisman, MD, Aetna's chief medical officer. "We know that our employees are enthusiastic and more than 3,800 employees have already visited the site to view the maps. There are many challenges facing our health care system, but one of its strengths is sustainable talent and dedication of our physicians. We want that each of them to know how much we appreciate their work. "
