Hiring will start in July, the company said. Aetna had 35,500 employees at the end of 2008, but said in December it would cut 1,000 jobs, or around 3 percent of its work force.
About 1,000 people already work at the New Albany facility, and Aetna said it will expand capacity to accommodate the new hires.
The Hartford, Conn.-based company is the third-largest U.S. health insurer based on enrollment. In afternoon trading, Aetna shares rose $1.16, or 4.7 percent, to $25.93.
