NEW YORK (MarketWatch) -- Shares of insurer Lincoln Financial Group (lnc) were among rare gainers in a broadly lower financial sector on Tuesday after the firm said it paid down half a billion dollars of outstanding debt and plans to pay off $200 million of commercial paper in the next several weeks. Lincoln shares rose 9%, to $6.93 Tuesday, while the broader sector, represented by the Financials Select Sector SPDR [S: XLF], fell 2.6%.
