Boxer Vargas, mom settle dispute over Oxnard home

Former world champion boxer Fernando Vargas and his mother have reached a settlement that ends their disagreement over the ownership of her Oxnard home, an attorney said today.

Vargas and his mother, Alicia Romo, have resolved the matter to the satisfaction of both, said Vargas' lawyer, Greg Ramirez. Citing a confidentiality agreement, Ramirez said he couldn't disclose any of the details surrounding the agreement, which was reached last week.

Romo couldn't be reached for comment today.

Vargas wanted to oust his mother from her home, which the former IBF and WBA junior middleweight champion claimed was his property.

Romo contended that in 1999, Vargas talked her into signing over her portion of the title to the property where she, her two sons and a 75-year-old relative live. Romo said she and her mother, who is now deceased, bought the house in 1979 when Vargas was a year old.

Romo represented herself during the eviction proceedings in October. She told a judge that she purchased the house on the 3800 block of Anchorage Street when she was 19 years old and since then she has paid the property taxes and insurance premiums on the property.

Romo also said she has never paid rent to Vargas. She said she wanted Vargas to produce a lease document stating that she agreed to be his tenant.
