Foundation banks on food sales to help others

A new charitable foundation, Caring God's Way, will be selling the turkeys and smoked Boston butts to raise funds for its mission.
Deep fried or smoked turkeys (12 to 14 pounds) cost $40 and smoked Boston butts (eight to nine pounds) will be sold for $30.
Organizer Carl Wolfe said while the foundation may be new, he and his foundation volunteers have been helping others through the sale of meat for quite a while.
Food sales helped raise $20,000 for the families of Wolfe's fellow Gardendale First Baptist Church members Bruce Lowery and Scott West after their deaths. He said the idea is to carry on that concept and help more families in need in the community.
"The purpose is to offer financial assistance in the event of catastrophic illness or death when there's either limited insurance or no insurance available," Wolfe said. "In the current economic environment, some folks don't have access to insurance because they've lost their jobs. There's a need in the community."
The purpose of Caring God's Way was inspired by James 1:27, which states: "Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress."
Wolfe said Caring God's Way is in the early stages of securing its non-profit status and will soon be reaching out to individuals and businesses across Gardendale and north Jefferson County.
The foundation will have a board of directors that will interview applications for assistance on an individual basis. He said the foundation will also serve as an information clearing house that will connect individuals with other organizations that may be of service, including grief counseling or financial planning.
The combination of holidays and bowl games may help provide the organization a great opportunity to raise funds through meat sales. Despite those upcoming events, Wolfe won't be alone at the grill.
"We have a lot of people who volunteer and stay behind the scenes," he said. "I enjoy doing the cooking and the fellowship. To me, working together in the community is where the joy comes from."
Those interested in ordering a turkey or Boston butt can reserve their meat by calling 608-1744 or 675-8017. Wolfe can also be e-mailed at cwolfe1076@aol.com.
Orders can be picked up on Nov. 25 from 4 to 8 p.m. and Thursday and Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
