Queensland Floods Inquiry To Probe Insurance Payout Denials

The Queensland floods inquiry will on Tuesday investigate claims Brisbane residents were denied insurance payouts after their homes were flooded when sewage systems overflowed.

In a written statement to the inquiry, Westlake resident Judith Dobrowa says her home sustained A$200,000 (US$195,760) in damage when the nearby sewer overflowed in the disastrous January floods.

She said insurer CGU had rejected her claim after assessors concluded the damage was caused by river flooding, which is not covered by her policy.

Ms Dobrowa is fighting the decision and maintains the damage to her property was caused by stormwater run-off from nearby properties entering the sewage system.

The Queensland Floods Commission of Inquiry will also look at issues relating to the inundation of the State Tennis Centre at Tennyson, on Brisbane's southside.
