Kennebunk, Maine - (BUSINESS WIRE) - March 31, 2009 - Mark Farrah Associates, a leading provider of market data and intelligence solutions, has examined the health organizations (HMOs), in its latest report on the strategy of health care businesses. The current economic crisis has often been compared to the recession that began in 1973. In December of that year, then President Richard M. Nixon signed the law of the Health Maintenance Organization Act of 1973, creating the industry managed care as we know it today. Health Maintenance Organizations (HMOs) have followed a rough road since then. At the end of 2007, the HMO companies covered 51.5 million people, approximately 20% of the insured population in the United States. In its latest report, Mark Farrah Associates health maintenance analyzes the two companies and health maintenance products from a promising start for the future.
The HMO Act of 1973 encouraged the formation and operation of HMOs by providing federal grants and loans to support the expansion during a period of five years. The federal government, arguing that the HMO model emphasizes preventive care to provide better performance, and cost control, hopes to demonstrate the feasibility of the HMO during this time. It is pretty safe to say that the law has to prove that HMOs are viable. Today, the concept of HMO - prepaid health plan covers preventive services and uses a network of suppliers - has become almost synonymous with health insurance. However, the HMO concept is rooted in the concept of the application of market forces to health care and three decades later, the struggle continues.
