Standard Life Lifted to Buy at BofA Merrill Lynch

MADRID (MarketWatch) -- Bank of America Merrill Lynch on Thursday upgraded U.K. insurer Standard Life (uk:sl) from neutral to buy, saying shares have underpformed the market by nearly 30% since the March rally, making for an "excellent" entry point for investors. The investment bank said Standard Life is less exposed to market conditions and risks, plus it has a balance sheet that isn't overly encumbered with intangibles. It also has one of the highest statutory surplus levels and the lowest level of asset gearing to this surplus, the investment bank said.
