A former Philadelphia, Pa., insurance claims adjuster will spend eight to 23 months in prison after pleading guilty to collecting on claims for fictitious car accidents.

Martin D. Greene, 49, a former employee of GE Property and Casualty Insurance Co. in Fort Washington, Pa., admitted issuing checks from his office computer, totaling more than $48,000, to two people who never made claims to the company, according to The Reporter (North Penn, Pa.)

Greene pleaded guilty to theft by deception and criminal conspiracy, and will serve three years probation following his prison term. He must also pay $48,300 in restitution, according to the report.

An investigation by the Pennsylvania Attorney General’s Office showed that between 2000 and 2002, Greene issued 26 checks in the company’s name to Darlene McCoy, totaling $44,788.33, and another check to Frank McCoy for $3,512.04, when neither filed an insurance claim for car accidents, according to The Reporter.

Darlene McCoy said she deposited the checks at various bank branches and withdrew the money when Greene asked her to do so as a “favor.” Greene claimed that she was in on the scheme to split the stolen money.

Greene also admitted to sending a check made out to Frank McCoy to Darlene McCoy, which she deposited and eventually split with the former insurance adjuster.
Greene has been incarcerated since his arrest in January.
