Survey finds buyers want their health plans to adopt the same rules for payment of Medicare
CHICAGO, February 24 / PRNewswire / - The non-profit Midwest Business Group on Health (MBGH) has published the results of a survey of employers and stakeholders in the health care industry about their knowledge and intentions to improve the safety and quality of health care is no longer paying for "never events" - serious and costly preventable hospital errors and nosocomial infections. The results were presented at a meeting of key stakeholders in the health care industry, including public and private employers, hospitals, health plans, doctors, consumer groups and organized by government MBGH in Chicago last week.
"There are several separate efforts under way in our community to reduce the conditions acquired in hospitals," said Larry Boresse, President and CEO of MBGH. "We have invited key stakeholders to come together for a in-depth discussion on the "never events" in the hope that we can bring continuity to these efforts and make faster progress toward improving the safety and quality of health care for all. The survey results
- More than 60 percent of employers feel they have to pay for
conditions that arose after the cover of the patient was admitted to a
hospital if the facility is not at fault.
- However, once employers have realized that Medicare had identified
conditions that should never happen to a patient and not pay for
services related to such situations, nearly 80 percent of health care
purchasers agreed that their health plans must adopt the same payment
policies related to these disease conditions.
- Nearly 100 percent of employer respondents said hospitals
refrain from billing patients for services paid by their
Benefits for events that experts say should not happen in a hospital.
- Sixty-eight per cent of employers agreed that should meet MBGH
plans, hospitals, employers, consumers and government agencies to define
and address as a community how hospitals should focus on
of "never events" and Medicare hospital-acquired
conditions lists.
MBGH is a Regional Roll-Out The Leapfrog group leader and is actively involved in hospital performance and public reporting efforts in Chicago, including the Leapfrog Hospital Survey. Part of this survey addresses 28 serious preventable errors or "never events as set forth by the National Forum of Quality (NQF). Currently, less than 47 percent of hospitals in Illinois participating in the Leapfrog Hospital Survey have agreed to respond to the Leapfrog "Never Events policy. Efforts are also being examined by national groups of payment to consider policies which fail to pay for such events in physicians' offices.
"Most small and medium-sized employers are not aware of the impact of" never events "to increase their costs for health care," said Joseph Balas, CEO Chamber of Commerce Chicago. "We are looking for large employers, hospitals and health plans to make progress in solving this problem to the whole community can benefit from improved quality and safety of care health.
MBGH the investigation and the meeting was supported by sanofi-aventis. The survey was submitted electronically, with over 50 employers and other health care to respond. Over 160 people attended the meeting.
