Holidaying at home? Grab a bargain break

Some 20% of Brits who went abroad in 2008 are now considering staying to the UK this year in a bid to save money according to new research.
The credit crunch is forcing more Brits to tighten their belts and some 90% of us are slashing back on our overall spend.
But a study by tourism body, VisitEngland, has concluded that the importance of holidays mean that we are less willing to cut back on getting away than in many other areas. The body said that one in five of those who took an overseas holiday last year will probably look to take a break at home in 2009.
In addition it found that well over half - 63% of the population - expect to take an English break or holiday in the next year.
The VisitEngland study found that exchange rates, such as the euro's strong appreciation against sterling, has meant that the affordability of certain destinations is major obstacle for those considering traveling abroad.
Conversely, potential visitors to England from overseas see the exchange rate as making them more likely to visit.
As has happened in restaurants across the UK, the tourism industry is offering its own set of special deals and '2-for-1' offers to potential vacationers.
For example the Hoxton Hotel sells rooms for £1 per night at various points throughout the year. But you will need to be quick when trying to book a room for a £1 as during the last sale 1,000 rooms were sold in less than 20 minutes.
In addition Tourism South East has launched a Winning in Recession campaign which includes a host of discounts and special offers. Deals available include two-night hotel breaks from £50, up to £100 off self-catering accommodation, 20% off attraction rates and a host of free children's places.
