The Credit Crunch Sees More Brits Travelling in the UK

Recent reports from a tourism trade association have revealed that, despite cost cutting becoming a mainstream measure in UK households, many Brits are not cutting travel from their expenditures. Instead, they're choosing to holiday a little closer to home.

The fact that travel has not significantly slowed is surprising, considering the major cuts people have had to make in order to survive the economic downturn. However, there are many possible reasons for the trend, one being that travel enables individuals and families alike to take a break from their everyday environment - which, for many, is dominated by the economic recession.

However, figures show that Brits are seeking a middle ground - they're travelling, but not very far. Instead of taking long-haul holidays, they're opting for both extended trips and mini-breaks within the UK. The find makes sense in the eyes of industry specialists, as travelling - even if just a few towns over - offers a change of scene, and gives people a chance to return to their everyday lives rested, and with a renewed sense of well-being.

Helen James, communications manager at UKinbound, told Compare and Save:

"The UK has so much to offer and it depends on what people are looking for. You can go on cycling holidays and golfing holidays - there are all sorts of things to do in all the different regions. There is something for everyone."

According to UKinbound, 2009 is expected to see even more focus on domestic trips, as many UK holidaymakerws are being forced to travel within the UK due to the impact of the economic downturn and the strength of the euro against the pound.

According to research from VisitEngland, 90 per cent of the British population is reducing overall spending on tourism. 63 per cent of survey respondents also said they expect to take a break or holiday in the UK during the next year.

Whether travelling in the UK or abroad, all Brits are encouraged to secure a comprehensive travel insurance policy in case they should fall ill, become injured, or lose their belongings.
