Some of New Orleans will be the most popular drawing visitors this spring, when the city relies on a series of major conventions to keep current tourism this summer.
The New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival celebrates 40 years of music with performances April 24-26 and April 30-May 3. The French Quarter Festival is scheduled for April 17-19.
A new event is the Louisiana premiere of the opera "Cabildo", written in 1932 by Amy Beach. The April 18 performance will take place in the courtyard of the Cabildo, a historic government building that is now a museum. Admission is free.
Tourism in New Orleans usually slows during the summer, but the industry is expected to get an increase of seven major conventions in June and July.
"This is the greatest in June and July, we never had," said Steve Perry, president of the New Orleans Metropolitan Convention and Visitors Bureau.
Low season in Yellowstone
Fewer tourists compared to last year, have booked advance reservations to visit the greater Yellowstone area this summer. Industry leaders hope low gas prices will attract people to lead national parks and other attractions in Montana and Wyoming.
Lee Haines, the Buffalo Bill Historical Center in Cody, Wyo.., Said the museum planners expect Billings Gazette flat number of visitors this year, with a slight increase to the extent possible the movement of recreational vehicles. He said that because many owners of recreational vehicles are retired, they have more flexible schedules that allow them to travel when gas prices are lower.
