Hostels 'for more than just backpackers'

Backpacker travel insurance customers are not the only ones using hostels, it has been asserted.
Hostelling International head of PR and communications Johan Kruger explained the changing industry has meant accommodation providers are now able to attract other types of clientele too.
"What many hostel managers realise is that there is an opportunity to attract more hostellers which are [not just] groups, young kids and backpackers," he said, adding the budget options were becoming more popular among young families.
The expert noted the social aspect of the accommodation is also a draw for travellers and holidaymakers.
Mr Kruger's comments come as online resource HostelBookers.com announced it will be offering backpackers accommodation from as little as five pence a night in some of its European destinations.
The beds are located in five beachside destinations - Barcelona, Valencia, Corfu, Alghero (Sardinia) and Santorini - and can be booked between June 1st and 5th.
